Polymerization is the process by which small molecules called monomers link together to form larger molecules called polymers. This differs from oxidation, which involves adding oxygen or removing electrons; rearranging materials, which means changing the connectivity without building larger molecules; and decomposing materials, which breaks down substances into smaller pieces. In practice, polymerization can be highly exothermic and require careful temperature control and stabilizers to prevent runaway reactions.
